On the nose – Floral, malty, balanced, nutmeg and rich honey.

On the palate – Gingerbread, vanilla, citrus, spice and oooohhh, more honey!

You’ll not need water with this one, it’s deliciously light to medium bodied with oodles of malt and sweetness to die for. This is one smooth number!

Doorly’s 14 year old Barbados rum 48% ABV

Another cracker, this ‘Rum of the Year for 2022’ is a pure single rum, aged at source and bottled without additives. As you can imagine, at 14-years-old, it shows the combination of tropical fruit, chocolate-y richness and dried fruits that have made Foursquare a favourite of rum drinkers the world over.

This is made of molasses and aged in ex-bourbon casks for 14 years, however there is a small percentage of rum aged for 14 years in ex-Madeira casks. It’s definitely a little more fiery that its predecessors, and contains zero additives aside from a bit of caramel colour to “restore the natural colour from the cask lost through dilution to bottling strength”.

On the nose – Intense sweetness combined with dry figs, unsweetened chocolate, dry red wine, sprinkles of cinnamon and a healthy amount of oak.

On the palate – The woodiness increases and meets dark cacao, strawberry jam and red fruits.

To finish – Charred oak and a dry plum-like taste.

This is a whole lotta’ rum in a bottle at a very reasonable price, and with its vibrant packaging, as soon as it’s been unwrapped, you’ll not struggle to add a smile to Dad’s face!
