The Compleat Angler (Marlow), Reviewed
Superbly located on the banks of the River Thames, with particularly beautiful views of the Marlow Weir, the Compleat Angler is the perfect location for a romantic getaway. Luscious views, fine dining across two restaurants, luxuriously expansive feature rooms and even afternoon teas on offer. Is the Macdonald Compleat Angler the complete package? We would certainly say so!
Sleeping
Wandering through the hotel’s reception there is a sense of subtle opulence and elegance throughout. Whether you take a drink in the Walton Bar or sit outside on the river, you will feel immediately tranquil and comfortable.
The décor throughout the bedrooms of the Compleat Angler aims to be quintessentially English and timeless. Promising 4-star luxury, rooms aim to provide comfort, luxury and relaxation. We were lucky enough to stay in one of the Feature bedrooms…
Designed for special occasions, the Feature bedrooms offer extra space and riverside views for the ultimate escape. Tasteful, neutral colours, comprise room’s modest aesthetic. A spacious bathroom with vanity sinks, a tub and Elemis toiletries. However, the private balconies overlooking the weir is where the room really shined.
Dining
At the Compleat Angler you can enjoy two fine dining restaurants that will tickle all of the taste buds! The Riverside restaurant unites an array of British ingredients and has two AA rosettes. Your second fine dining option, opened in 2014, is Sindhu by Atul Kochhar. The newest addition to the hotel, Kochhar’s menu is a contemporary exploration of Indian cuisine. Looking for a cocktail or a Scotch? The Walton Bar, nestled within the heart of the hotel, offers a selection of these and a selection of spirits from around the globe.
Our visit saw us reside in the Riverside restaurant. Newly refurbished, the space was ideal for candle lit dinners and the river made for a stunning ensemble to the meal. Relaxed, yet elegant and contemporary. Service was delivered with a high level of fine dining refinement and with a sense that we were in very good hands.
Having visited other Macdonald hotels, we have noticed that Smoked Salmon John Ross Jr is a signature of the hotel’s and one we are particular fans of. Pickled onion, capers and a salmon parfait provide work well with the salmon to enhance the smokey flavour. Moving on to mains, a 28 day wet aged Highland Rib Eye with bone marrow and Portobello mushroom was the star of the show. Succulent, tender and brought to life by the melt in the mouth nature of the bone marrow. Sublime. Breakfast was also served in the riverside restaurant – once again there were superb panoramic views of the river and probably one of the best cooked breakfasts we’d had for some time. Generous portions of Stornaway black pudding and an array of very high-quality produce yet again delivering full on flavour.
