World’s Biggest Diamond Found in South Africa

A diamond the size of a tennis ball has laid claim to the title of the world’s biggest diamond. Unearthed in South Africa, the stone weighs in at a hefty 6,000 carats or 42oz.

The giant find is estimated to be twice as big as the next largest gem quality diamond (the Cullinan Diamond) which weighed in at 3,106 carats and was found in Pretoria a little over 100 years ago.

The diamond was photographed next to a mobile phone to give it some scale.

Value of the stone has been estimated at $30 million (£15 million) but will ultimately depend on it’s purity.
