Mews Of Mayfair, London – Review

Tucked away just off New Bond Street you`ll discover MEWS of Mayfair, an elegant yet positively eccentric venue that spans four floors of bar and restaurant. Prior to our visit we`d heard some great things about the French inspired menu and simply had to take a closer look for ourselves.

The venue itself is situated within a historic courtyard and was originally terraced 18th Century mews houses (hence the name). The interior design combines original character with a modern vibrancy that makes this venue quite unique in its own right. It feels like a private club with dinner, drinks and dancing across its different floors… but there`s not a stuffy attitude or expensive membership fee in sight!

The restaurant is situated on the top floor of the building and has an incredibly ambient feel about it thanks to its lighting, furnishings and neutral colour scheme. At fists glance the menu definitely has a French edge with its mouth watering mix of seafood, vegetarian and meat options that straight away tell you that the chef knows his onions (excuse the pun!).

We opted for 6 fresh oysters (from Essex) and liver fried Foie Gras both of which were absolutely faultless and left our palettes calling for more!

Next us we opted for the jumbo prawns and fillet steak… and boy did we choose well. The prawns were grilled and bursting with freshness and flavour whilst the steak measured up to Gaucho standards, full of flavour and cooked to rare perfection. We later found out that the steak was actually also farmed in Essex and was cooked in a rather unusual way – it`s vacuum packed and placed at the bottom of a pot of boiling water for a few minutes (temperature around 75 degrees) to sear the flavours in. I`ve never heard of steak cooked this way, something the Lithuanian master chef has founded, and something that I can see catching on very quickly.

Finally, we opted for the Chocolate Tart and selection of cheeses, both of which were also fine and highly recommended.

Overall, you`ll love the incredibly welcoming service, flavours, atmosphere and location. A great destination if you want a couple of cocktails, an a la carte menu, dancing… or perhaps all of these!

We`ll be going back sometime very soon!
