A Journey Through Scotland in a Single Glass: SMWS The Five Regions
Some bottles don’t just hold whisky. They hold an entire landscape. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s The Five Regions is precisely that kind of bottle, and from the moment I set eyes on it, I knew this was something worth paying attention to.
The label alone stopped me in my tracks. That richly illustrated scene of harbours, highlands and rolling Scottish geography wrapped around the glass feels like a love letter to the country itself. It sat on my desk for a full day before I opened it, simply because it looked so good there.

Released to coincide with whisky festival season, this 11 year old expression brings together malts from all five of Scotland’s whisky producing regions: Campbeltown, Speyside, Islay, the Lowlands and the Highlands. The ambition alone is extraordinary. The execution, as I discovered on first pour, is sublime.
Matured across four different cask types including bourbon, Oloroso sherry, Pedro Ximénez and specially charred HTMC hogsheads, the complexity in the glass is immediately apparent. I nosed it for a good few minutes before even taking a sip. There are notes of fudge doughnuts and glacé cherries, caramelised apple, warm nutmeg and a whisper of star anise. Rich, inviting and almost dessert like.
On the palate it delivers beautifully. The sherry cask influence gives a wonderful dried fruit warmth, while those bourbon woods bring a gentle vanilla sweetness. At 50% ABV there is real weight and presence without ever feeling overpowering. I tried it neat first, then with just a few drops of water, which opened it up magnificently.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a membership based independent bottler founded in Edinburgh in 1983, selecting single casks from over 150 distilleries across Scotland and beyond, always bottling at natural cask strength. Every whisky undergoes blind tasting by a panel of experts who assess its readiness purely on flavour, without knowing the age or distillery behind it. It is a wonderfully purist approach to whisky, and one that consistently delivers releases of genuine character and distinction. If you are not already a member, The Five Regions is as good a reason as any to change that.
This is whisky that rewards patience and attention. At around £74, it represents genuine luxury without pretension. A stunning addition to any collection and frankly, one of the most enjoyable drams I have encountered this year.
Available via the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Savour responsibly.
