One Canada Square, London – review

Standing proudly in the lobby of the iconic Canada Square, sits the cool and sophisticated bar and restaurant, One Canada Square. With its rich and elegant decor designed by David Collins Studio this place is the perfect setting for a client lunch, after-work drinks or a romantic dinner for two.

On arrival we took our seats at the bar and were handed an iPad which displayed the sensational cocktail list with exclusive G & T’s, modern twists on the classics, and a whisky menu which will blow you away. I would recommend the Pornstar Martini which is accompanied by a side of Proscecco and for those with a sweet tooth, the Rhubarb and Rose bramble. If you are quenching something a little bit more bespoke call over the unique cocktail trolley ready to make you whatever you wish.

The classic and comfortable restaurant really didn’t disappoint either. With racing green leather furniture and herringbone table tops it was oozing character and style. Accompanied by an exciting, modern menu we were eager to sample the many creations from ex-Ivy Club Head Chef, Jamie Dobbin.

We would definitely recommend sampling the pre-starter Raw Bar dishes. A favourite for us was the wild bass ceviche with exotic mango, tangy lime and punchy chilli salt. The combination of such prominent flavours gave each mouthful a unique and sensational taste. Another favourite was the steak tartare with a hen’s yolk. Beautiful presented, the yolk nestles neatly on top and when split it runs down the tartare complimenting the rich flavours.

Again, the starters do not disappoint. The miniature Quail Kiev with it’s crunchy walnut Waldorf slaw was a huge highlight and the Rose Veal with salsa verdi and anchovies was extremely flavoursome. Just two of the many beautiful starters created by the talented, Mr Dobbin.

For main, the Herdwick Lamb accompanied by boulangere potato, rosemary curd and crosnes. I could definitely detect a hint of “food envy” on my table! The lamb was succulent and the boulangere potato was sweet and creamy. My partner went for the hearty One Canada Square Pie which, that evening, was braised cumbrian ox cheek with onion gravy. This wholesome dish had beautifully tender meat, rich gravy, and perfect pastry….no soggy bottoms here!

Each of the beautiful dishes was served with accompanying wines as recommended by, Sarah, our very professional waitress who had an extensive knowledge of the menu. One recommendation was the Australian Grenache Shiraz, The Holy Trinity (2009), which complimented our hearty and gamey mains – a wine we won’t forget!

The beautiful cocktails, flavoursome food and excellent wines made for a special evening at, One Canada Square. Topped off with great service, a warm atmosphere, and an excellent location this place really did exceed all expectations.
