Combermere Abbey Whitchurch Shropshire – 5-star Holiday Cottages Review
If you`ve been searching for that exquisite 5-star rural escape, Combermere Abbey on the Cheshire/Shropshire border is one of those exceptional family and dog-friendly hideaways that will live up to even the most demanding expectation. So whether you`re looking for a romantic weekend away, a family retreat or a long-term business let, we think that Combermere Abbey will deliver the highest levels of quality throughout the duration of your stay.
Comprising of ten individually designed five star eco-friendly holiday cottages; there is a style to suit every taste, from understated contemporary to traditional elegance. The holiday cottages are the result of a conversion of the original stables and coach house, which are positioned around a beautiful cobblestone courtyard (dating back to Napoleonic times) that can sleep between 4 – 10 guests each. Every aspect has been carefully thought about to ensure your stay is the best it can be. As soon as you step into your cottage you will feel an extraordinary home from home comfort, which is immediately relaxing to the senses.
Set amidst stunning grounds and gardens this establishment also has a wealth of history behind it, and has hosted a number of distinguished visitors including Charles II, William of Orange, Samuel Johnson and Mrs Thrale, and Elizabeth, Empress of Austria, who described the Abbey as “picturesque, wild and romantic”. The holiday cottages actually comprise of the original stabling yard of the grand Abbey. The restoration project has clearly been an immense one, but certainly one to be proud of – the colour schemes and quaint character pieces around the properties have clearly been thought about and are possibly as close to the original as you could get.
We stayed in a self contained cottage on the wing of the stabling yard called `Wellington`, after the Duke of Wellington`s visit well over a century ago. The property sleeps 5 very comfortably, with one family bathroom and an en-suite for the master bedroom. The decor is classic/contemporary and furniture, extremely comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped so you only really need to bring yourselves! This cottage is perfect for a mid-sized family.

Combermere Abbey have just relaunched three new self-catering cottages, all of which have a more contemporary feel to them. In the past, these have only been available as corporate lets, but thanks to huge demand the owner has recently refurbished these and is now allowing them as holiday lets. We had a brief tour of the properties and were suitably impressed. Each of the three new cottages sleeps between 4 and 10 guests, bringing the total capacity at Combermere Abbey cottages from 27 to 49 guests, perfect for group bookings or even weddings.
