Millers At Glencott House, Somerset – Review
There`s something about Jacobean mansions in the country… classic English architecture at its finest, and there`s always a dramatic history surrounding it. We recently reviewed Millers At Glencot House, a perfect, well restored example of fine English heritage nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills, Somerset.
The property has had all manner of past lives including that of a school… but it`s now firmly in the hands of hotelier and antiques expert Martin Miller who has worked his magic on it. The hotel itself is around 5 miles from Glastonbury (which is well worth a visit, especially if you can make it up to the Tor on a clear day – the view is absolutely stunning). The best way to describe the hotel is `good old fashioned English eccentricity` within a countryside paradise. It`s like nothing we`ve reviewed before, completely unique, individual… and we loved it!
On every wall, bookshelf and in every corner you`ll find all manner of antiques or curiosities from all over the world. But to talk about it doesn`t do it justice and we`d hate you to think that it sounds like a junk shop, far from it in fact. It`s only difficult to move around the mansion because it`s so easy to stop and take in the marvels staring back at you.
The property offers 15 unique bedrooms, all of which have been independently designed, and again, all of which offer a range of exotic antiques and ancient curiosities within its own mini theme. There`s a `mini-ma` (small and very cosy cinema) with a broad range of DVDs to watch, snooker room, bar, restaurant… everything you need for a relaxed stay. In addition, you can fish in the river outside, take afternoon tea on the terrace, walk the acres of grounds (keep an eye out for the interesting curiosities carefully placed throughout the garden) or perhaps visit one of the two reading cottages and literally bury yourself in books!
Our room had fantastic views across the gardens, cricket pitch and was extremely comfortable with all the mod cons you`re going to need for your stay.
We took dinner in the restaurant, which again was adorned with antiques and pictures, none of which particularly matched… but it created for a homeliness we`ve not experienced before. The atmosphere is intimate, lighting is mainly by candle and the music is `good/different`. The food was also top notch and very reasonably priced. There was a distinct flavour of truffle (my favourite) in the dishes… highly recommended you experience this if you decide to stay here.
Overall, we really can`t say anything negative about it. A truly memorable experience that left us recharged, inspired and smiling from the inside and out. The prices are incredibly reasonable, service couldn`t be nicer, combined with the laid back vibe has ensured we`ll be back very soon!
