What to wear at Goodwood racecourse
Fashion model Jodie Kidd has created the `Fashion Guide to Glorious Goodwood` this year.
More relaxed than other major UK race meets, Glorious Goodwood is all about `effortless chic` and beautiful summer dresses.
The guide has a range of tips to help men and women get their outfits right for Goodwood and other summer events.
The Glorious Guide provides hints and tips for all styles and budgets, recessionista tips and which colours might work best.
Jodie Kidd says:
`The perfect event to enjoy horseracing and socialising at its very best, Glorious Goodwood is a stylish day out for anyone. This year we created the guide to take the stress out of what to wear and achieve the `effortless chic` which it has become known for. The festival is different to other major race meets as it`s extremely stylish, yet relaxed. I love it because the overall feeling is very `English summer` – you`re surrounded by countryside with beautiful views and you can dress-up but it`s not about formal tailoring or being `showy`.`
Some of Jodie`s hints and tips:
1. Think Glamour meets Garden Party – be sure to balance ravishing with a daytime feel
Think classic with a modern twist. Dreamy 40s-inspired tea dresses, statement-focused art printed silk shifts and womanly halterneck styles, with full 50s-styled skirts worn with fitted cropped jackets, are all bang on trend. Both high-end and high street are in on the act this season from Kate Moss at Top Shop to Reiss, Oasis, Matthew Williamson at H&M and Joseph. Or check-out the scalloped edges at Chloe or unique pieces from Philip Lim and Les Chiffoniers.
2. Recycle or update – you don`t have to go on a spending-spree to look good
Take the recessionista approach and inject new life into last summer`s bright white dress – give it the dye treatment in one of this summer`s zinging colours like orange, fuchsia or purple. Bring your favourite dress up-to-date by adding just one new piece, such as a divine cropped fitted jacket, or shrunken cardigan in one of this summer season`s hottest colours – cobalt blue or coral. Or update a classic wide-brimmed hat with an exotic oversized flower which reflects one colour in your outfit.
3. Men – experiment with splashes of colour in contrast to your suit and don`t forget your Panama hat
Linen suits and Panama hats are de rigueur at Glorious Goodwood. The lightest cream or beige linen suit with narrow lapel, will look even more appealing with an injection of a vivid violet or deep rose pink cravat or tie. Alternatively, accessorise dark, rich, navy linen suits with canary yellow, highlighting one of the Goodwood racing colours. Shirts should remain plain or white.
Taking place from 28th July to 1st August, with Ladies Day on Thursday 30th, Glorious Goodwood has top-class racing and is one of the highlights of the social summer season – described by Edward VII as `a garden party with racing tacked on`. Set on the UK’s South Downs near Chichester, the racecourse is often referred to as the most beautiful in the world.
